Long Weekend in London Day 1

 Trooping the Colour

Colonel’s Review - Saturday 10th June 2023

Prince William - Colonel of the Welsh Guards

‘The Origin of Trooping the Colour’ from the Official Programme

Two excited Aussies navigating ‘The Tube’
on the way to Horse Guards Parade ground.

Before we bombard you with photos and videos of the parade, let’s back track a little to when Tony was 12 and playing cornet with the Police Boys Band. His uniform was a red tunic, black trousers and a black hat. The first LP (that is a ‘record’ for those of you who don’t know…if you don’t know what a record is, look it up!) that he bought had this cover…and he was hooked! From that time on he dreamt of seeing the guards live at Trooping the Colour.

Back to the present and his boyhood dream comes alive!

Video Highlights of the Day

There is more than just the Band so keep watching!

…and finally the man responsible for it all

Garrison Sgt Major, London District, WO1 Vern Stokes, Coldstream Guards. He has the responsibility for all ceremonial activities in London which have included:
  • The Coronation of King Charles III
  • The Funeral of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II
  • The Funeral of Prince Philip
Love his rank insignia (the massive badge on the upper arm).

So, after an amazing morning of music, horses, uniforms, bling, dust and the almighty overbearing heat penetrating our bodies for two hours we strolled off for a much needed bite to eat followed by a matinee showing of the musical ‘Matilda‘ in a lovely cool theatre.

Cambridge Theatre, London

The amazing set design for Matilda.

This was an amazing show full of clever child/teen actors. Set walls that moved in and out to create the various scenes. Tables and chairs that popped up from the floor of the stage to set the classroom scene and the music…phenomenal!!!

What a fantastic and memorable day!!
